I really liking the Renaissance plugins at the moment...
Waves | Plug-ins | Renaissance Equalizer
Waves | Plug-ins | Renaissance Compressor
Waves | Plug-ins | Renaissance Bass
Bootsy freeware pack is good place to start
KVR: bootsie roundup
from commerical plugins i really like all stuff from Stillwell Audio
Audio Plugins | Stillwell Audio - It's About The Sound
for saturation IK Amlitube is great. I love AmpegSVX for bass saturation. Jimi Hendrix and Metal are both nice for screaming tones.

although they are nice clinical processors they add zero warmth. totally transparent would be more my way of thinking of them.
for real warmth in compression have a look at
softube stuff - 1176 FET, or CL1B.
or
waves CLA bundle
or
UAD neve 33609
for warmth without compression
bootsie ferric
or
wavearts tube saturator
or
soundtoys decapitator
or
URS saturator

I gotta disagree (And we both know I'm way smarter than you Baz so I hope you are sorry for your mistake! )..
waves R comp adds warmth and is far from transparent (my fave compressor and RQ is my fave EQ)
Renaissance EQ and compressor used throughout a track bring warmth. I don't just mean use it especially to make ONE sound warm, but on most sounds that you will be EQing and compressing and you should get some warm results.
I think they are just subtle enough that you can use them as your 'workhorse' tools for these jobs but not so over colorful that you can only use them as a specialist warmth tool so to speak.
Like I say if used on many sounds the combined results show.
the obvious compressor for saturation is PSP Vintage warmer I would say.
PSPaudioware.com - high quality audio processors and effects plug-ins in AudioUnit, RTAS and VST format for Mac and PC
All PSP plug-ins are pretty special
I like Antares Tube for adding color, warmth, magic, sex appeal or whatever you call it
Antares Tube: Analog Tube Modeling Plug-In
is simple but works if you want subtle or brutish results.
For more specialist EQ jobs Im in love with URS
Unique Recording Software
In my opinion they are sublime.
alot of people swear by the URS compressors also... personally they are not for me and Im not realy a fan of them BUT worth a look without doubt.

As for space in tracks...
This is mostly about EQ (the subtractive kind), reverb (often the subtle kind), creative use of the stereo field, balancing the levels of your sounds (think dynamically rather than every sound must be upfront, compressed and loud or whatever)
Really the subject could be gone into much deeper and is worthy of its own thread/topic
maybe you will find this useful...
Music Production Tips from Tenth Egg
not exactly in-depth but simple and easy to read and it covers a couple of your questions.
you are so wrong. they're more transparent than a cheap hookers knickers!
If you are going to choose just one bunch of plug-ins for the job I would highly recommend the Renaissance pack
Waves | Bundles | Renaissance Maxx
Also, I have been salivating over these EQs lately. Highly, highly, highly recomended...
Waves | Plug-ins | API 560
Not sure about the waves renaissance stuff, I think the effect is more psychosomatic than real. I`ve never really noticed that much effect with them, but I tend to stay away from waves gear anyway.
Crysonic NXtasy is a fantastic product for adding tube like warmth/Harmonic Distortion to sound.
With that problem taken out of the way you can then focus on using good compression applicable to the job.
There are quite a few nice compressors out there all with their own quirks and character.
I`m a huge fan of Liquid Mix stuff, and would recommend a Liquid Mix to anyone.
Sonalksis make a lovely compressor with some interesting and useful features and their dynamic EQ is simply amazing for mix tricks not possible with anything else. Their TBK3 extreme compressor is just madness. Very unique.
Stillwell stuff is also very good. The Rocket compressor is pretty nuts.
I find the Sonnox plugs to be good for EQ also.
"Warmth" is a subjective term, I find good use of EQ and use of sound will give more warmth than a "warmth" plugin.
If your mix is already warm from your sound treatment then the use of a valve type harmonic distortion in a very subtle way will be all you need just to add a touch of silk.
Creating space is all about EQ and sound placement within stereo.
EQ isn`t just the application of an effect to a sound though. The best EQ is choosing the right sound for the mix in the first place.
I am not here but my ghost still lingers
