    EQ it? Compress?

    what does the kick sample sound like to begin with?

    sounds like you got too much high end going on...

    sub bass will help a lot to even out the sound.

    actually, reverb is a bad idea. makes the low end muddy as hell.

    depends on how you use it. keep it VERY minimal--and small--and it can add a bit of size. put too much and, as you said, it goes muddy.
