    Default External HD

    My external hard drive is goosed

    everytime a plug it in it comes up with

    "Power surge on hub port... a USB has exceeded the power limits of its hub port blah blah"

    right what can I do to sort this???

    do i need a new power supply for the hard drive, theres 500Gb of stuff that needs saved!!

    any help appreciated!

    Was it working before on this same computer, or are you using your new laptop? If it's never worked with this laptop, it might not be getting enough power from the USB port, so either plug in both USBs if the cable has two at the end, or try with a powered hub like this one:

    D-Link 4-port USB 2.0 Hub

    Also, if it is a laptop, then it's a good idea to reset the embedded controller. Unplug the power cable, remove the battery, and press the power button to drain any residual current. Leave it for 10 mins to settle, and then put it back together and try again.

    hey man, its my usual laptop and yeah it was working before.... tried it on another laptop and the same thing happened...

    the HD starts to turn on but doesnt fully come on and kinda dies...

    il try what you said but i think il need to try another power supply aswell

    OK, if it's multiple machines then yeah I'd try a new power supply.

    Open it up, work out what type of drive it is and buy a new house for it.

    got on the email to the company, turns out its a fault with that model of HD...

    so there sending out a replacement power supply, hope that works cause I need the stuff on the HD
