    Default whos uses a pre amp

    trying to record my turntables into ableton but just get distortion and terrible hiss does everyone with this setup use a pre amp before connecting to your soundcard

    You need to set your input to record from LINE and volume at line level (0dB), and set the mixer to line level (no red) output. Make sure your cables aren't near any power cables. And use a decent audio recording software (i.e. Cool Edit, or any straight to raw/WAV recording software), Ableton is for sequencing.

    when i set the mixer to line rather than phono i get no reading on the leds at all

    and do you mean record the set in live and edit in cool edit or sound forge

    Normally the jack socket marked in green is LINE.

    Only use Cool Edit, etc. for recording, forget Ableton.
