for me the most important part of the study are the monitors
Spend as much money you can in them
I personally I have Adam A7 , I never regret having spent money on them

Depends how much you want to spend and what your using them for

    For basic nearfield monitoring...

If you want to buy new upto £250 these always get ok reviews as basic no frills monitors

    KRK Rokit
    Behringer Truth
    Alesis M1

Although I would rather buy £500 speakers second hand.

    Upto £500 / £600
    Smaller Genelecs (8020)
    Adam A5 / A7
    Focal CMS

    Upto £1000
    Larger Genelecs
    Dynaudio BM5
    Neuman KH120

Depends a lot on how big your room is and what treatment you have in there. If you have £500 to spend then buy some reasonable quality second hand monitors (£300) and budget £200 for a basic acoustic tile pack.

Theres a good article here that gives an overview of 10 decent monitors under £1000

A pair of Focal Twin 6be with a Focal Sub6...... no coloration... very transparent.... I have that set up and love it...... They sound a million times better than cheap monitors that color the sound and lie to you......

At the low-end of the market there's always ESI nEar 05/10 which is an excellent pair of home studio monitors. Cost about 200£. A little flat and harsh sound, so not to be used for hours on end
