    Default Pigeon holed

As a dj i find mixing one style of dance music a little boring and therefore i experiment mixing different styles of hard dance music such as fusing "Hardstyle" with "Hardtrance" with smatterings of "Techno" for good measure.

It seems to work quite well and i find that the clubbers i have played to really like the fact that they don't know where the set's going to go next.

But the thing is i feel a little unproffesional doing this but i don't know why :?: Maybe it has something to do with the fact that i can't be pigeon holed into one style of dj..ie a Techno dj..a Hardtrance dj etc.

But surely this can't be a bad thing as in my opinion being a dj is about expressing yourself through the music that you play and if that means an element of unprodictability then so be it.

    Any thought's :?:

i think if you ask most djs on here what they play they will say a mixture of trance techno and hardstyle in a night, usually progressing from trance to techno then to hardstyle in a set, i think it all depends on the density of your set, if your only playing an hour then you have less direction availible to you but if youve got a 2 hour or more set you can take it further and move through styles smoother i think, this is something that has been on my mind recently as i have only just started to play out and i kept my first set pretty safe but i want to get a little more diverse now.

a mixture is definetly a good thing especially when it has direction
Sequence is coming. It's going throughout your imagination. It takes you where you've been before. A higher state of mind. Yeah, you remember the early times. Now were trying to take you again. In the deepest seas of your consciousness.....Time never stops

All the best djs play more than one style but you got to get it right, you cant just go wacking techno, trance, hardstyle and prog in a se willy nilly!

Yeah agreed EmotionComplex, hour set's tend to sound rough rushed if your switching styles as there's no flow and clubbers struggle to find a groove.

I've started playing a bit of Techno now and again, but I'll always be a hard trance DJ, as much as I cuss Hardstyle I still buy the occasional decent hardstyle tune for something harder at the end.

I'm even playing a Prog set at our next event! ;)

I think you should just play what you like. Play it how you think it should be heard best. If that involves playing mixture of styles, a balance of soft/hard or uplfting/dark or whateever, then that is your prefecnce.

I personally like to either play uplifting/hard trance or hard trance/hard style. I just feel too much of the same genre can be a bit boring so having the best of those genres put together I feel is best.

But I don' think you should start play other genres just because your worried that people won't like you for playing just one genre. Just play what you think is the best receipe for good music!

    Hopefully your listeners will agree!
