Another cheapy that sounds as good as the big boys is the FMR Audio RNC1173 - I know a lot of people that rave about this.

getting a UAD-1 is exactly the oposite of spending lots 'o money... U get top notch quality for a fration of the price of the hardware counterpart... also 4 my current setup/ life it's sooooooooo much easy 2 have it in software... no more taking notes of knob position, rewiring, cabling, space, etc...

yeah, for sure but iff the money is there why not a high end tube compressor?
Power corrupts. Absolute power is kind off neat.

1000 Euros get's ya fo*k all in the high-end... A serious compressor is lil' bit more expensive if u know what I mean...

The all UAD-1 is around 1000 € and u can use a few High-End comp.

Is it better ... NO... but I would rather have 16 realllllly good comp/ eq on a track... bounce and then have some more... than only 1 amazing comp.
which can do wonders 4 sure but if I got my tracks and need 2 do DA conversion---- comp --- AD Conver. 2 bring it back in... sonically & pratically speaking speaking the gains are marginal and the work is hyper! :(

    Default Quality comps

I agree the Avalons are sexxyyy beasts  and that's preety much what I'm after especially the VT-747 SP , I don't have a lot of money like someone was assuming above, but I'm serious about my music and it's production and like most of the people on here I'll find a way to get a piece of gear I need .......

The UAD sounds like a great package and I will definetly check it out next time I'm at my local gear shop , but I'm after a warm sound and I'm not sure if has that or not !??? and also I'd have to buy a tower to use a pci-card .

Also I agree that the Focusrite compounder is great comp. as well and quarter the price of say an Avalon or a UA comp.

UAD definitely has pretty much the same tonal colouring as a real urei as you drive it ... so if that's the kind of thing you mean by warmer sound then it's worth checking out. it's much better than the urei emulations made by bomb factory for digidesign.

Without a PCI u are preatty much limited 2 a Powercore Firewire, The plug ins are good and u can get a few of the same of the UAD, but as a standard is a weaker package!

PS - TC is terminating a lot of software and moving it's full task into the powercore platform (no piracy there so...).. It's a sad but not surprising move!
