FAVE label: City centre offices.
FAVE Producer: Charlie Clouser
FAVE DJ: DJ Boss
Fave Live Act: The Young Gods, by a long long long way.
Fave newcomer: Tough tough decision, will have to be a list....
Rory St John: For amazing production/synth technique.
Villain: For unexpected and very fresh sounds and textures.
Force: Again for artful and original programming technique.
Casual Violence: For taking the dark side away from the rather tedious birmingham model that most seem to follow.
One to look out for in 2007.
Those mentioned above, plus some of the other more original people that have emerged on BOA over the last year or so, and who seem to be trying something different.
Force, Rory St John, Villain, Stoq, Jay Pace (not really a newcomer), Bloodstar spring to mind immediately, but there are also a few others who I hope will forgive me for not mentioning.
All in all a very dissapointing year for techno (well, techno techno, the stuff that sits between minimal and schranze).
Lots of releases by people mimicking their idols.
An increasing stagnation and lack of risk taking in general, it doesn`t surprise me at all that minimal has got so popular, as there seems to be some genuine artistry going on and a genuine spread of diversity within this subgenre.
However, there does appear to me to be a new bunch of rebels emerging who are making interesting sounds and doing it in a different way, which is very encouraging.
I fear however, that 2007 will breed more armies of Dave the Drummer and Glen Wilson clones (which is no discredit to either producer, both lead their fields, rightly so) and more homogonisation within the rather ailing techno scene.
Bring on the diversity and the end of single minded-ness.
