True, but the same could be said of the Community shield and that's pretty meaningless. I mean a lot of the teams were shit back then since champions of wank leagues got in, and there was no seeding. I'd say it's more of an achievement to win it now, albeit less of one to qualify for it of course.

whether or not it was more or less of an achievement to win, it was considered a much more important trophy back in the day.
it's actually only been since the scousers beat milan on pens to win it that it's really been devalued.
that's not sour grapes either, because to me it's as important as ever, it's just the way the trophy is viewed since that final.
until then, folk had pretty much assumed you were the best team in europe to win it. this was obviously not the case in istanbul.
