actually mr. know-it-all. the vst 303's that everyone use are programmed in exactly the same way as a tb303

and a bloody expensive one at that.

to a trained ear there are slight differances between a good vsti 303 and a tb303 - but as this thread proves the differances arent noticeable to the average listener.

'A' sounded a bit flat to me, but the way my ears have been abused over the years, I'm lucky to be hearing anything at all! In any case, all this experiment proves is that I know sod all about production, and am virtually tone deaf. Nice acid line, though.

I was going with C,but only because there was a slight hiss behind it. It sounded like it had been plugged in,not was a plug in.

here's a little video comparing the tb303 with the retro revolution

    did you guess right?

C just had a bit more "swing" for me, that why I went for it. if that makes sense ...

It's more fair to not use distortion. Adding distortion only masks the 303's unique sound. Pretty much anything can sound like a 303 when it's overdriven.

Now let's see who can pick out the real 303 when it counts, in a track!

eh? thats totally fair. the whole idea was to prove that emulations can sound exactly like a TB when used in certain ways.

this isnt an "i can tell a real 303" contest. **** me, theres plenty of us that know what one sounds like, its not exactly medal worthy. it was just a comparative experiment.

Of course they can, that's why they're emulators. But when you're using distortion, you're masking all the machines' true sound. I can probably get my Casio CZ-101 to sound like a 303 running it through distortion. A bit of clever sequencing is all it takes. Your comparative experiment loses value when not using a dry signal. Just my views.

and that was the whole point of the experiment. to show how, and in what circumstances an emulator can sound exactly like a 303. not to disprove it.

Just had a quick listen - damn b and c are close. Don't have the real deal myself but picked up a x0xb0x, pretty good.

There is some good 303 comparison stuff at the site below, including distortions - hardware emulators only tho:
