POLITICALLY INCORRECT AND DAMN PROUD OF IT!!
Are you writing about Techno as a genre specifically, or the emergence of the dance scene in the UK in general.
The Uk scene definitley has its roots in the politics of the time, thatcher, unemployment, yuppie aspirations, disillusioned working class masses seeking escapism, back lash against manufactured pop acts, people taking control of and making music for themselves, parralells with punk movement, sexual tolerance cross over from gay - str8 scene, rediscovery of LSD / misinterprutation of US slang ACID etc etc UK scene owed so much to media scare stories only a handful of parties until exposed by the tabloids then the following week every ****er wanted a trip and pill, cheap air travel IBIZA.
Should be easy to find articles in back issues of Mixmag etc
man this is gonna be some essay.
Would be great if you could post the finished piece on here.
Champagne for my real friends ....real pain for my sham friends.
I did a paper on this a while back. Here's a few of my sources.
Dan Sicko: Techno Rebels: The Renegades of Electronic Funk, Billboard Books
This was a pretty good one as Sicko is a Detroit native and was a scenester from the early days and was politically aware also. He gives social commentary in politics, racial issues and socio-economic issues especially the bond that alot of the impoverished black guys from Detroit ghettos and the poor guys from Berlin slums andsome of the social parallels they had.

These guys are exactly what you are looking for. The motherload of documentable info on anything to do with detroit electronic music.

I wrote these guys and they bent over backwards to help me out too.
Hope this helps.
Well,in the UK,there was a massive new age traveller scene going on at the time the Rave scene exploded. Also,Maggie Thatcher was trying to stomp them out of existance. (think battle of the Beanfield) The goverment made it illegal to listen to non stop music all night in public places (or something, check the Criminal Justice Bill for more) There was big unrest, and a backlash which saw the scene explode into mainstream clubs, with licenses allowing the music to be played all night.
you want to check out Tashes site for the beanfield stuff. http://tash.gn.apc.org/gal_beanf1.htm If you didn't allready hate Maggy T,you will after seeing that shit!! Mothes with babies in their arms getting beaten up by the plod, ect.
